Animal Shelter Surgical Assistant Comforts Dog After Surgery By Rocking Her Like A Baby

As a human, it can be very scary to have surgery – knowing you’re being put under, but unable to control anything after that. To wake up from surgery can be a particularly confusing experience, coming off of heavy medicine and trying to get a baring on your surroundings again. I remember when I woke up from having my ACL repaired, being particularly terrified to find a brace and ice around my knee. Being completely unprepared and unaware of what I’d wake up to, feeling something constricting and heavy around my knee was unbelievably scary.

With the experience of surgery as a human in mind, I can’t imagine what it must be like for any animal to go through surgery. It must be terrifying beyond belief, being unable to understand what is happening or why. That’s why it was particularly touching to watch the below video. A shelter dog, Baby Meesha, was coming off of her anesthesia and was very scared. Surgical assistant, Dennis Moses, from the BARCS Animal Shelter in Baltimore, MD, stepped in to comfort her, rocking the shelter puppy like a little baby, and it’s the sweetest thing. Watch the video below and make sure to turn on the sound – your heart will melt!

Baby Meesha was coming off her anesthesia and was a little scared because her body felt so weird. BARCS Surgical Assistant Dennis Moses took her out into the quiet hallway to comfort her. One of our awesome volunteers just happened to be walking by to capture this sweet moment. Thank you to Dennis and all the staff who work long, tireless hours in the background of our shelter—saving lives and loving the animals. (Turn on the sound, it will melt your heart!)

The BARCS Animal Shelter also recently posted another update, sharing a picture of Meesha (now Maddie) with her new family. Check out the photo below!

So glad that the pup found a new family so quickly and is settling in well!
