I couldn’t imagine hurting an animal – cat, dog, lion, tiger bear… to me, they are all living creatures. They have two eyes, a nose, and a mouth. They have needs for companionship, food, water, shelter, and ultimately want to reproduce and pass their genes off to their offspring. Does this sound familiar? It should, because this is what we, as humans, need and want at the most fundamental level. I believe people that don’t value animals on the same level that they value humans fail to realize that we often have a lot more in common with them than we have differences. Thank goodness for people on the other side of the spectrum, like the heroes at Hope For Paws, that have a profound level of empathy towards and appreciation for all living things, or else this Pit Bull may have died of his injuries, or have been captured by animal control, deemed beyond help, and euthanized.
This Pit Bull, Buddha, is one of many dogs saved by Hope For Paws. In this particular case, they had received reports of a large Pit Bull being assaulted by children with rocks. When they arrived on the scene, the dog was cowering behind some trash cans, bleeding, with multiple injuries including one to his shoulder. After about an hour of gaining his trust, the rescuers gently placed a lease around Buddha’s neck and guided him out of the vacant lot.
Upon getting Buddha out of the lot and into their vehicle, a change in Buddha’s level of anxiety could immediately be detected. Almost instantly, he was resting against the driver’s chest as though to say, “Thank you for saving me… I trust you.”
